Thw Wisdom Of A Few Stupid People

Jonah Goldberg has written an interesting column about the wisdom of including a few dummies in the decision-making process.

Well, it turns out that having a few stupid people in the group makes the group smarter. I've long suspected this, but I found confirmation in James Surowiecki's new book, The Wisdom of Crowds. It works like this. Groups of experts tend to reinforce their own views, particularly because experts believe in the authority of experts, causing them to defer to the super-expert in the group.
...
The utility of the muttonhead is that he's too dim to cotton on to the groupthink and therefore is more likely to raise unconventional ideas.

On the whole, I agree with you, Jonah. But having served up the lob, please excuse me if I indulge in the obvious slam:

You're right, but they shouldn't be made Commander-in-Chief!

Dittos, Rick!

Good point, Rick.

By the way, not to kick Bush when he is down, but his demeanor during the debates reminds me of some of the southern televangelists, such as Kenneth Copeland. (I sometimes enjoy watching the televangelist shows; they are quite entertaining.) As someone who grew up in the South, Bush's way of speaking and mannerisms really strike me as southern (maybe that's obvious since he is from Texas). I think this is one reason why he strikes such a responsive chord in the South but doesn't do so well among northerners.

Off topic, but...

In my teens (pre cable days!) it was locally popular to get inebriated and enjoy the meandering inanities of the Reverend Gene Scott on late late TV. He was particularly funny when he wore his pith helmet and safari jacket, and his regular glasses over his sunglasses.
