Kerry's Foreign Policy Team

Based on Kerry's op-ed piece in the Washington Post today (more discussion below) and this article by Ron Brownstein on Kerry's emerging foreign policy team, I'm feeling a lot better than I was one week ago.

John Kerry is assembling a network of foreign policy advisers more hawkish than most Democrats but more skeptical of military solutions in the struggle against terrorism than the team surrounding President Bush. . . .

[I]nsiders believe those with the most influence on the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee tend to support the forceful use of military power, including in Iraq, yet place a much higher priority than Bush and his team on maintaining support among allies.

I will never be excited about Kerry, but I have been searching for a reason to consider voting for him beyond my general feeling that a change is necessary. Items like these get my attention. However, in light of his to-date incomprehensible explanations of his votes on Iraq, I am going to need a lot more of this to get comfortable.

Yeah, I'm not sure Kerry can flank Bush by assembling a team of "hawkish" democrats skeptical of military solutions.

And it's not the case that I disagree with his current views as recently stated. I agree strongly that non-military options and fostering alliances have to be part of the solution. Our resources have limits and the fight will likely prove too difficult to carry on without the united will of western democracies.

But Bush has never said that he disagrees with these notions. He hasn't addressed it much, although tonight he stated words to the effect that he wants Americans to understand that he views military force as always his last resort.

With Kerry the worry isn't whther what he's saying now is the right policy. The worry is over what his policy will look like AFTER he no longer needs the votes of centrist hawks. And whether he can be counted on to stand firm and not waver when the chips are done. I have problems with virtually every other policy area of Bush. I just don't kniow whether we can afford to elect a President with a well-known history of equivocation.

People change their minds. Haven't you ever done something and then looked back and said, I wouldn't have done that if I had known....?
Only a fool refuses to admit he's made mistakes and be open minded enough to take a second, even third look at any situation.
Kerry did what he thought was right at that moment time. Like many of us he is looking back now and ADMITING he made a mistake and is trying rectify that.
The problem with Bush is that he can't admit he made a mistake. He refuses to learn from experience. He continues to put his trust in the very people who have put him in the spot he is in right now. His trust in those people (Rove, Rumsfield, Ashcroft, Cheney,) scares the hell out of me. One is power hungry, one is incompetent, one is a religious zealot determinded to rewrite the Constitution, the other is so greedy he'd sell out his own Mother for the right price. These men cannot and must not be allowed to continue to determine the future of our country. So unless the President shows some intent to make some changes, I cannot vote for him. Kerry it will be.
